“If we went with the other consulting firm, we would simply be a small fish in a big ocean; but with this practice, we’ll be an important fish.”
This statement, made by a board chair from a liberal arts college, affirmed my decision to establish a consulting practice specifically designed for small private institutions. As an independent consultant, I am accountable to you, and because I only undertake a limited number of consulting engagements at any one time, I am able to give timely, focused attention to your institutional needs.
I care about student-centered private colleges and universities because I know the difference they make in people’s lives, including my own. After graduating from a liberal arts college over thirty-five years ago, I began my career in higher education administration by working for my alma mater. My career trajectory eventually took me to larger institutions and for fifteen years to an Ivy League university, but my desire was always to work again with small colleges to help strengthen the unique and valuable educational experience these institutions provide. Consequently since 2004 I have served and held leadership positions on the governing boards of three liberal arts and sciences colleges.
The foundation for my consulting was established at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) where I was a consultant for three years, writing occasionally for the publication, Trusteeship. I believe the AGB and other organizations of its caliber are a tremendous resource to presidents and boards, however I chose to create an independent consulting practice specifically designed to address the governance and leadership needs of small private colleges and universities. As a result of my specialty and size, I am able to deliver quality, need-specific help that is also affordable.
